Hey, Sarah & Gary Here

Faith & Everyday

Have you ever had a moment where you thought, “I think God is speaking to me”…—but then almost instantly wondered, “Wait, what if that’s just me?”

If so, you’re in good company. This tension—between sensing God’s voice and second-guessing ourselves—shows up for nearly everyone who desires to walk closely with Him. And let’s be honest: it can feel heavy, even scary.

Here’s how it often sounds in our heads:

  • What if I get it wrong?
  • What if I say something I think is from God, and it isn’t?
  • What if I totally miss what He’s actually saying?

Sound familiar?

The Weight of Hearing God

There is a weight that comes with hearing God’s voice, especially if you believe what you’re sensing might be for someone else. None of us want to misrepresent Him. None of us want to cause confusion, or worse, damage someone’s trust in God.

That’s why the fear of “missing it” can feel so paralyzing. Sometimes, it feels safer not to say or do anything at all.

But here’s the thing: staying silent might feel safe, but it doesn’t help us grow.

Growth Requires the Risk of Failure

Every skill requires practice—and hearing God is no different. Just like learning a new language, it takes time, patience, and yes, making mistakes along the way.

The good news? Mistakes don’t disqualify you. They shape you. They’re part of the refining process.

Think about the disciples. They misunderstood Jesus all the time. They asked awkward questions, misinterpreted His parables, and even argued about who was the greatest. Yet Jesus didn’t shut them down—He patiently taught, corrected, and walked with them. If He could extend that kind of grace to them, He will extend it to you, too.

How to Move Forward with Courage and Clarity

So how do we step past fear and into faith when it comes to discernment and the prophetic? Here are a few simple, practical steps:

1. Stay Anchored in Scripture.
God’s Word is always the filter. If what you sense contradicts His Word or His character, it’s not from Him. Period.

2. Invite Community Wisdom.
Don’t try to carry discernment alone. Invite trusted, mature believers to weigh in. Prophecy was never designed to be a solo activity—it grows best in the soil of community.

3. Be Humble in Delivery.
You don’t have to announce, “Thus says the Lord!” Try, “I sense God might be saying…” or “I feel like He’s putting this on my heart…” This creates space for dialogue instead of defensiveness.

4. Keep Practicing.
Like anything else, you’ll get better by doing. Start small. Journal what you sense. Share gently with people you trust. Look back and reflect. God often teaches as much through reflection as through revelation.

5. Trust God’s Ability to Lead You.
Remember—He’s a good Shepherd. He knows how to guide you, even if you stumble along the way. Don’t let fear of failing become bigger than your faith in His ability to lead.

6. Be Quick to Apologise.
If you do get it wrong, own it. Apologise with humility and, if appropriate, offer to pray. People respect honesty far more than perfection.

Final Encouragement

The fear of “missing it” often comes from a good place—a genuine desire to honour God. But don’t let that fear stop you. He’s not setting traps for you to fall into; He’s training you to trust Him.

Even in your uncertainty, He is with you. He delights in your willingness to step out, not in your ability to be flawless.

So take the next step. Ask. Listen. Respond.

Don’t worry about being perfect—just be faithful.
